The Great Southern Reef
Defined by forests of golden kelp (Ecklonia radiata), rocky reefs and lush sponge gardens, the Great Southern Reef (GSR) is an interconnected underwater system fringing more than 8000 km of Australia’s southern coast; from Kalbarri, Western Australia to the NSW/Queensland border. 16 million Australians live within 50km of the GSR yet few know it exists. @greatsouthernreef

Funded by NSW Ports as part of their annual community grants programme and supported by Wollongong Council this 45m x 4m mural at Western Suburbs Pool aims to raise awareness of human impacts on The Great Southern Reef. A vibrant collaboration between science and art, the mural by Karla Hayes visualises research by PhD candidate Allison Broad and Professor Emeritus Andy Davis from University of Wollongong on the impact of anchor scour on the mysterious sponge colonies deep off Wollongong's coastline.
